CWC to decide on Perikatan Nasional move for MIC

PETALING JAYA: MIC has denied joining Perikatan Nasional.

The party is still with Barisan Nasional, said its deputy president Datuk Seri M. Saravanan.

“MIC is still with Barisan, as the party has not decided on anything,” he said.

For MIC to officially leave Barisan, he said the party’s central working committee (CWC) would have to make the decision.

“We have not joined Perikatan. As of today (yesterday), MIC is still in Barisan,” he said when contacted yesterday.

According to reports, Perikatan Nasional secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan claimed that the coalition had officially accepted MIC as a component party, offering the veteran ethnic-Indian party a “better role and position”.

He also announced that an official letter would be handed to MIC to formalise its entry into Perikatan.

Takiyuddin was scheduled to meet MIC president Tan Sri SA Vigneswaran in Kuala Lumpur last night to clarify the decision.

“MIC was actually accepted earlier, in December 2025.

“However, the latest Perikatan meeting on March 14 confirmed the minutes of their acceptance as a member party under the coalition’s new leadership,” he told reporters yesterday.

Takiyuddin said that Perikatan currently comprises four component parties: Bersatu, PAS, Gerakan, and the Malaysian Indian People’s Party (MIPP).

On MIC’s current status within Barisan Nasional, Takiyuddin stressed that it was not Perikatan’s concern.

“That is their issue. Once they applied to join Perikatan and we accepted that application, the matter is settled as far as we are concerned,” he said.
