Cops probing alleged fake gold bars linked to pawnbroking transaction

PETALING JAYA: Police are investigating a case involving alleged fake gold bars linked to a pawnbroking transaction at an Ar-Rahnu premises in Sungai Besi.

Cheras OCPD Asst Comm Mohd Rosdi Daud said police have received four reports in connection with the case.

“Two reports were lodged on March 10, by two local men, including a buyer of the pawn certificates and the gold owner, while two more reports were lodged by the Ar-Rahnu manager on March 11 and 13,” he said in a statement on Tuesday (March 17).

Initial investigations revealed that the complainant had pawned 19 gold bars worth approximately RM225,530 between July 28 and Sept 3, last year.

“On March 10, the complainant claimed that the gold redeemed was fake,” he added.

However, the Ar-Rahnu operator has denied the allegation and lodged a police report to refute the claim.

ACP Mohd Rosdi said the main report has been referred to Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM), as matters involving licensing and operational coordination of Ar-Rahnu fall under the central bank’s jurisdiction.

“The other reports are being investigated in conjunction with the main case and police are continuing investigations into the case,” he said.
