KUALA LUMPUR: The passing of former Chief Judge of Malaya Tun Siti Norma Yaakob is a great loss to the nation, particularly to the judiciary, which had benefited greatly from her contributions throughout her service.
The Office of the Chief Registrar of the Federal Court, in a statement on Friday (March 13), said the late Tun Siti Norma, who served as Chief Judge of Malaya from Feb 8, 2005, to Jan 5, 2007, had rendered significant service to Malaysia's judiciary.
"Throughout more than 40 years in the legal and judicial service, the late Tun Siti Norma was known as a distinguished figure who overcame various obstacles and broke the glass ceiling within the country's judicial institution.
"She was also recognised for numerous landmark judgments that became important references and reflected her wisdom and authority as a judge," it said.
In this regard, Chief Justice Datuk Seri Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh, on behalf of the Malaysian judiciary and its entire staff, conveyed his condolences to the family of the late Tun Siti Norma.
Her contributions and achievements also paved the way for more women judges to assume top positions in the judiciary, setting an example that women are capable of attaining the highest ranks within the judicial institution.
"Indeed, her passing is a great loss deeply felt by members of the judiciary in particular and the country in general," the statement said.
Meanwhile, former Chief Justice Tun Md Raus Sharif said the late Siti Norma would be remembered as a pioneer for women in the judiciary, noting that she was the first woman in the country to be appointed as a High Court judge, Court of Appeal judge, and Federal Court judge.
He said Siti Norma later rose to become Chief Judge of Malaya, the third-highest judicial position in the Malaysian judiciary, breaking barriers and paving the way for generations of women judges in the country.
"She was a highly respected jurist and administrator, not only in Malaysia but also internationally. After her retirement, she was appointed as a judge at the Dubai International Financial Centre, reflecting her experience, integrity and wisdom," he said.
Similarly, senior counsel Datuk Firoz Hussein Ahmad Jamaluddin said that Siti Norma would be remembered for her formidable intellect as well as her patience, courtesy, and compassion throughout her years of service on the Bench.
"Her landmark judgments had made an enduring contribution to the development of the law and would continue to be respected and appreciated, ensuring that her legacy remains firmly etched in the country's legal history," he said.
Siti Norma passed away at the age of 85 due to pneumonia at KPJ Ampang Puteri Specialist Hospital here, at 1.51pm.
