NGO to host third charity treasure hunt

THE Educational, Welfare & Research Foundation (EWRF) Malaysia will host its third annual Charity Treasure Hunt in aid of 18,000 students from B40 families, Makkal Osai reported.

Formed in 1979, EWRF has been working to promote educational and socio-economic growth of the underprivileged, said its president Muthamil Chelvan Arumugam.

This year’s interstate treasure hunt has attracted 200 participants in 50 groups.

They will travel from Selangor to Perak to find “treasures” along the way. The winning team will take home RM3,000, with RM11,000 in prizes up for grabs.

> The daily also reported that three members of a family died in Chengkalpattu, Tamil Nadu, India, in a fire caused by a mosquito coil.

The victims were identified as Parthiban, 33, wife Jeyachitra, 29, and daughter Jeyashree.

The couple had apparently lit a mosquito coil while they slept but unknowingly placed it too close to some clothes.

Neighbours who saw smoke billowing from the house alerted the fire department which could only retrieve the three charred bodies.

Investigations are ongoing as the town reels from shock.
