Marine police seize liqour, white cigarettes worth over RM3mil


KOTA BARU: The Marine Police seized liquor and white cigarettes worth over RM3.53mil in two separate operations in Pasir Puteh and Pasir Mas recently.

Marine Police Region Three commander Asst Comm Mohd Khairuddin Jamal said a patrol boat raided a C2 class local fishing boat at Tok Penghulu, Sungai Semerak, Tok Bali, Pasir Puteh at 12.30am on June 25, while another team chased down a one-tonne lorry and car being driven suspiciously at Salor, Pasir Mas on June 26.

"(In the first case), checks on the vessel (which had an expired licence and was not being used for fishing activities), led to the discovery of 50 cartons of liquor with an estimated quantity of 396 litres.

“The total value of seizures including taxes is estimated to be RM1,517,549.50,” he said in a statement on Saturday (June 27).

A foreigner, in his 40s, who admitted to being the caretaker of the area, was also arrested for not having legal travel documents.

In the second case, the marine police team chased both vehicles for about 16 kilometres until Ketereh, Kota Baru, where they skidded and stopped by the side of the road.

"The suspects managed to escape, but inspections of the vehicles revealed 976,800 white cigarettes believed to have been smuggled, and the total value of seizures, including both vehicles, is estimated to be RM2,014,464," he said, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967. – Bernama
