Local boat rescues sinking cargo ship crew near Mersing

MERSING: A local fishing vessel saved 13 crew members of a cargo ship which sank in the Seri Buat waters near here due to leakages onboard.

Mersing maritime zone director Maritime Commander Suhaizan Saadin said the Kuantan Maritime Rescue Sub Centre (MRSC) received a distress call on the sinking ship at around 8.30pm on Thursday (March 12), before it was channelled to the Mersing maritime zone.

“We quickly deployed our Penggalang 43 patrol boat to the scene to rescue the crew members of the cargo ship,’’ Suhaizan said in a statement.

He said 13 crew members were transferred to the patrol boat and brought to the Penyabong jetty for further action.

Suhaizan said the crew – all local males aged 19 to 63 - were safe without any injury.
