GOF corporal detained in probe of border agency commander shooting

PETALING JAYA: A General Operations Force (GOF) corporal has been detained to assist in investigations into a shooting incident involving the commander of the Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) in Bukit Kayu Hitam on Feb 25.

Kedah police chief Comm Datuk Adzli Abu Shah said the policeman, in his 30s, was arrested last Thursday (March 5) by the state Criminal Investigation Department (CID) before being remanded for seven days.

He said the corporal had been serving at the border for the past two years as an intelligence operative, adding that a urine screening test found him positive for ketamine.

“The arrest was not made over the drug offence, but to assist investigations into the shooting involving the AKPS commander,” he told a press conference, as reported by Sinar Harian.

Comm Adzli said initial investigations found that the corporal had close ties with members of a syndicate believed to be involved in the incident.

He said the policeman was believed to have been at the scene with syndicate members about four to five hours before the shooting occurred.

“Information indicates he was close friends with syndicate members and had taken drugs together with them. We will not compromise on such matters,” he said.

Comm Adzli added that the corporal was released on police bail after his remand period ended.

Police will also apply for a bond under Section 118 of the Criminal Procedure Code to ensure the suspect continues cooperating with the investigation, he said.

He stressed that the case was serious as it involved a shooting attempt involving an enforcement officer, adding that investigations would be carried out thoroughly regardless of who was involved.

Comm Adzli also said police would discuss with the corporal’s commanding officer whether he should be barred from duty to prevent any possible information leak.

“The suspect is among 11 individuals arrested so far. Police urge anyone with information on the case to come forward to assist investigations,” he said.

Earlier, it was reported that in the Feb 25 incident at about 5.40am, a vehicle carrying Senior Asst Comm Mohd Nasaruddin Mohd Nasir was fired at twice by unidentified suspects.

The case is being investigated under Section 3 of the Firearms (Increased Penalties) Act 1971 for discharging a firearm with intent to cause death or injury.
