Price controls, strict monitoring keep festive food prices stable, says consumer group

KOTA KINABALU: Price controls and efficient monitoring have kept essential food items reasonably priced during the current festive season, says National Consumer Foundation Malaysia (YPNM) Sabah branch chairman David Chan.

He said the strict enforcement of the Festive Season Maximum Price Scheme (SHMMP) by the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry had ensured that essential food items remain reasonably priced during the current Ramadan and Hari Raya Aidilfitri season.

Chan said the combination of price control measures and close monitoring by enforcement officers has safeguarded consumers from profiteering and unreasonable price hikes when demand for festive goods is traditionally higher.

He urged traders and retailers to comply fully with the gazetted list of controlled items, stressing that any attempt at manipulation or profiteering would burden consumers and undermine market stability.

“At the same time, with ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East that may affect global fuel prices and supply chains, YPNM reminds consumers to spend wisely and manage household expenses prudently during this festive period,” Chan said.

He added that Hari Raya should be celebrated in a spirit of joy, gratitude and togetherness, with traders, enforcement authorities and consumers working hand in hand to maintain a fair and stable market environment.

“YPNM remains committed to protecting consumer rights and supporting government initiatives that ensure fair pricing, transparency and economic stability for the people of Malaysia,” he added.
