Penang exco to discuss Jelutong landfill rehab project following DOE rejection

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang executive council will hold a discussion following the Environment Department's rejection of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report for the proposed Jelutong landfill rehabilitation and reclamation project.

Penang local government and town and country planning committee chairman H'ng Mooi Lye said the state executive council, which met on March 11, decided that the Penang Development Corporation would chair the discussion.

He said the meeting would examine issues related to the project before the state government makes its next decision.

This comes after the Environment Department rejected the EIA submitted by PLB Engineering Berhad for the proposed "Landfill Rehabilitation and Land Reclamation Works for Mixed Development at Section 8, Bandar Jelutong, Timur Laut district, Penang".

"The Penang government was informed that the Penang Environment Department, through a letter dated March 2, rejected the EIA report," H'ng said in a statement on March 11.

The proposed project involves rehabilitating part of the former Jelutong landfill and reclaiming land for mixed development.

The Jelutong landfill, located along the eastern coast of George Town, was once Penang island's main dumping ground, operating from the 1970s until the early 1990s.

Parts of the former landfill area have since been redeveloped into waterfront developments such as The Light Waterfront Penang.

However, rehabilitating remaining sections of the landfill remains technically challenging due to the large volume of buried waste and potential ground settlement issues.
