A TOTAL of 524 pupils, including 206 girls, will be taking part in the state level chess competition among Selangor Tamil schools, Makkal Osai reported.

The event is organised by Selangor MIC and the Selangor Tamil School Headmasters Association, and will be held at the Sungai Renggam Tamil school in Seksyen 18, Shah Alam.

The competition, which will be divided into the Under-12 and Under-6 categories, will encourage further interest in the game, especially among Indian girls, and develop future champions for the country.

> The death of a monkey was mourned by an entire village in India with funeral rites and remembrance ceremonies, Makkal Osai reported.

The Dalpatpura village in Madhya Pradesh had adopted the monkey as part of the community after it had lived among them for many years.

When the monkey died recently in an accident, villagers reportedly prepared a funeral pyre and conducted last rites before cremating their friend.
