IGP: We’ve stepped up patrols along borders

KUALA LUMPUR: The police have intensified patrols and security deployment at national borders and key locations across the country following the escalating tensions in the Middle East.

Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail said he had instructed all state police chiefs and police department directors to enhance monitoring and security measures in light of the latest geopolitical developments involving Iran.

He said the increased security deployment also included close monitoring of US and European interests in Malaysia.

“The enhanced security measures cover US and European assets in the country, as well as houses of worship that could become targets for certain parties,” he told a press conference at Bukit Aman yesterday.

Mohd Khalid said the police were continuously holding meetings with the National Security Council to assess developments related to the situation.

“For everyone’s information, there are about 2,500 Iranian nationals currently residing in our country, and we are constantly monitoring them to ensure our security situation remains under control,” he said.

He added that the ongoing monitoring and security measures reflect the police’s commitment to maintain public order and ensure the country remains free from any external threat.

Global tensions have escalated amid the worsening conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran, with intensified military operations, widening diplomatic strains and growing humanitarian concerns in several regions.

On another matter, the IGP said police recorded statements from three individuals to assist investigations into allegations of a plot to bring down the government and sabotage the country’s stability.

He said investigations were ongoing and more individuals would be called to have their statements recorded, depending on the needs of the probe and information obtained.

“So far, three individuals, including the complainant, have been called in to have their statements recorded.

“We have not yet called the influential individual involved in the case,” he said.

Mohd Khalid added that the case being investigated by the police was not linked to any other investigation currently conducted by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission.
