IGP urges calm amid Negri Sembilan controversy

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have urged all parties to remain calm amid the ongoing political crisis in Negri Sembilan.

Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail said police would continue to ensure security and public order in the state.

“I would like to appeal to all parties to remain calm and refrain from making unnecessary comments.

“I believe the incident in the state involves issues related to adat and budaya (customs and culture) practised in Negri Sembilan.

“As a security force, we will always ensure that safety and public order in Negri Sembilan are maintained,” he said after a press conference at Bukit Aman on Thursday (April 30).

Mohd Khalid also urged the parties involved not to issue statements that could affect efforts to maintain stability.

Asked how many police reports had been lodged over the matter, he said there were “many”, mainly involving dissatisfaction over the issue.

“We will conduct investigations and determine the appropriate course of action moving forward,” he said.

On April 19, the four Undang Yang Empat declared that they had removed Yang di-Pertuan Besar Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir on grounds of alleged misconduct.

The four are the Undang of Sungei Ujong Datuk Mubarak Dohak, Undang of Jelebu Datuk Maarof Mat Rashad, Undang of Johol Datuk Muhammed Abdullah and Undang of Rembau Datuk Abdul Rahim Yasin.

On Monday, all 14 Barisan Nasional state assemblymen withdrew support for the state government led by Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun after the Mentri Besar maintained that Tuanku Muhriz remained the state Ruler.

Barisan holds 14 of the 36 state seats, while Perikatan Nasional has five. Pakatan Harapan holds the remaining 17.
