Teen killed, another critical in Tawau crash as car driver dozes off behind wheel

KOTA KINABALU: A teenager was killed while her younger brother remains in critical condition after an oncoming car crashed into them along the Merotai-Tawau road on Thursday (March 5).

In the 4.30pm accident, a 44-year-old was believed to have fallen asleep when he was behind the wheel, causing the car to veer into the opposite lane before crashing into both victims who were on a motorcycle.

Tawau OCPD Asst Comm Jasmin Hussin said following the mishap, both victims were taken to the hospital for emergency treatment while the car driver escaped unscathed.

“The victims, an 18-year-old SPM leaver and a vocational college student, 17, were in critical condition,” he said, adding that the 18-year-old girl succumbed to her injuries at 4.08am, Friday (March 6).

ACP Jasmin advised the public to be alert and careful when on the road, and to pull over at a safe place if they are feeling sleepy to prevent micro-sleep.

He also warned against drunk driving, which could also cause accidents.
