MACC urges Rafizi's ex-aide to contact investigators, return to Malaysia to assist in probe


KUALA LUMPUR: Graft busters are urging Chai Jin Shern (James Chai) to contact investigators and return to Malaysia to assist in an ongoing investigation.

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) said Chai, who is a former aide to Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli, is required to immediately present himself at the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya to assist in the investigation.

"Despite multiple attempts by the investigating officer to contact him, Chai has yet to respond or make arrangements to present himself to assist in the investigation.

"If Chai maintains that he has done nothing wrong, the appropriate course of action is straightforward - present himself to MACC investigators and provide his statement, rather than continue issuing public explanations while avoiding direct engagement with the investigative process," the commission said in a statement Friday (March 6).

Accordingly, he is instructed to contact any of the following MACC officers without delay to arrange his return to Malaysia and the recording of his statement:

MACC emphasises that cooperation with law enforcement authorities is a basic obligation of any citizen when required to assist.

"Public narratives and media statements cannot replace the legal process of investigating cases.

"We therefore urge Chai to immediately contact any one of the investigating officers of his plans to return to Malaysia to assist the investigation," it said.

The commission reiterates that all investigations are conducted professionally, independently and based on evidence, and no individual is above the law.
