KOTA KINABALU: A 44-year-old woman has died after an alleged assault following a dispute with a man believed to be her boyfriend in Penampang near here.
Police have detained the 41-year-old man to assist investigations into the case, which is being investigated as a murder.
Penampang OCPD Supt Sammy Newton said the local woman was taken by ambulance to Queen Elizabeth Hospital I here on Monday (Aug 31) in an unconscious state.
She was pronounced dead later that night.
“Initial investigations found that the incident was believed to have stemmed from a misunderstanding between the victim and the man before she was allegedly assaulted,” he said in a statement on Wednesday.
Sammy said the suspect, also a local, was arrested by the Penampang district Criminal Investigation Department following investigations into the woman’s death.
Police also examined the scene together with the Sabah police contingent headquarters’ D10 forensic team.
Police collected several case exhibits and related samples for further investigation and forensic analysis.
The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.
Sammy reminded the public not to speculate or draw conclusions over the incident while investigations and legal proceedings were ongoing.
