PETALING JAYA: Malaysia and Thailand will focus on strengthening border connectivity, security cooperation and economic ties during two high-level meetings in Bangkok on Tuesday (Oct 27).
Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Utama Mohamad Hasan will lead the Malaysian delegation to the 16th Joint Commission Meeting (JCM-16) and the seventh Meeting of the Joint Development Strategy for Border Areas Malaysia-Thailand (JDS-7).
The meetings will be co-chaired by Mohamad and Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow.
The Foreign Ministry said both sides would review progress in bilateral cooperation and discuss measures to further strengthen relations between the two countries.
"Key areas of discussion will include political and security cooperation, trade and investment, social and cultural relations, as well as border area development, particularly the implementation of connectivity projects between the two countries," it said in a statement on Tuesday.
The discussions will also build on the outcomes of Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul's official visit to Malaysia on July 9 and 10 this year.
Mohamad will be accompanied by senior government officials from relevant agencies, with meetings at the senior officials' level preceding the ministerial discussions.
Meanwhile, bilateral trade between Malaysia and Thailand rose 26% to RM97.76bil from January to August this year, compared with RM77.38bil during the same period in 2025.
Thailand was Malaysia's sixth-largest trading partner globally and second-largest among Asean member states last year, with total trade valued at RM118.57bil.
The ministry said the figures reflected the continued growth and potential of economic ties between the two countries.
