Sungai Johor Bridge safe for use after close call with ship

A vessel drifted close to Sungai Johor Bridge but no damages to the bridge structure was reported.

PENGERANG: The Sungai Johor Bridge remains safe for use after a vessel drifted close to its structure on Wednesday (Sept 2).

Senai-Desaru Expressway Berhad (SDEB) chief executive officer Mohamad Yasrib Mohamed Shariff said the incident occurred at about 2.30pm.

The incident attracted attention on social media, with videos and pictures of the vessel near the bridge going viral. Some posts also claimed that the bridge had suffered serious structural damage.

However, Mohamad Yasrib said SDEB had immediately carried out an inspection and assessment of the bridge structure following the incident.

“Based on the inspection conducted by our technical team, the Sungai Johor Bridge structure was found to be in a safe condition and there was no impact on the safety of road users,” he said in a statement.

He said the bridge remained open and traffic could proceed as normal, adding that the vessel had been moved away from the area at about 3.16pm.

“SDEB will continue to prioritise safety and monitor the condition of the bridge structure from time to time to ensure the safety and comfort of highway users,” he said.

He also advised motorists to comply with traffic regulations, drive carefully and follow any safety instructions issued from time to time.
