Kulai warehouse fire: No new cases of schoolchildren experiencing symptoms, says Johor exco man


KULAI: A total of 120 schoolchildren experienced mild symptoms following the fire that broke out at a rubber and plastics storage warehouse here.

Johor health and environment committee chairman Ling Tian Soon said that however, no new cases were reported on Friday (Feb 27), and the figures were based on cases recorded on Wednesday (Feb 25) and Thursday (Feb 26).

“Based on the data involving students that we have received, 78 experienced symptoms on Feb 25 and 42 on Feb 26.

“No additional cases were reported on Feb 27.

“All cases involved mild symptoms,” he said in a statement here on Friday (Feb 27).

He added that no referrals to the hospital or ward admissions were recorded.

On Thursday (Feb 26), Ling said the Kulai Health Office had received reports of pupils experiencing mild symptoms such as headaches, coughs, sore eyes and shortness of breath.

“A total of 56 pupils from SK Taman Kota Kulai displayed such symptoms, while SK Taman Kota Kulai 2 recorded 24 pupils.

“All those affected have received medical attention. Nobody has been admitted to hospital,” he said on Thursday (Feb 26).

The fire, which was reported at 4.37pm on Tuesday, led to the closure of SJKC Sengkang, SJKC Kulai Besar, SK Taman Kota Kulai, Sekolah Agama Taman Kota Kulai and SK Taman Kota Kulai 2 on Wednesday.

All classes have been moved online via Home-based Teaching and Learning for the time being.

About 90% of the flames at the storage warehouse had been extinguished by 10am on Thursday, according to the state Fire and Rescue Department.

Clouds of thick smoke could be seen billowing from the site.
