IPOH: Politicians who ignore a royal decree prohibiting speeches in mosques will have to face the consequences, says Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad.
He said Perak Ruler Sultan Nazrin Shah had clearly decreed back in 2019 that politicians are not allowed to give speeches in mosques or surau.
“Everyone, including myself, must comply with the Sultan’s decree.
“Elected representatives from both the government and opposition benches should do the same,” he told reporters yesterday after presenting mock cheques for university students’ aid programmes.
Saarani, who is also the state Islamic Affairs committee chairman, was asked about Parit MP Muhammad Ismi Mat Taib from PAS, whose photos delivering a talk at a surau had gone viral on social media.
“Those who choose to violate the Sultan’s decree must be prepared to face whatever action that follows,” Saarani said.
On aid programmes, he said the state government has allocated RM4.7mil this year to help Perak-born university students.
He added that the initiatives announced under the Perak Budget 2026 aimed to ensure that students can continue their studies amid the rising cost of living.
The aid will benefit diploma, degree and postgraduate students, with payments ranging from RM500 to RM1,000 per student.
“The state has also set aside RM750,000 to offer RM150 book vouchers to 5,000 students so that they are able to purchase reference materials and textbooks,” he said.
