Malaysia, Japan reaffirm commitment to stronger defence ties

PETALING JAYA: Japan remains a key partner in Malaysia’s bilateral defence relations, says the Defence Ministry.

In a statement posted on its official Facebook page, the ministry said Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin had received a courtesy call from Japanese Ambassador to Malaysia Noriyuki Shikata.

Also present was the newly appointed Japanese Defence Attaché to Malaysia Colonel Iwao Yasuhiro.

During the meeting, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening long-standing Malaysia–Japan defence cooperation.

“Japan is one of Malaysia’s key strategic partners in the Indo-Pacific region in efforts to enhance regional stability and maritime security, including through the Asean Defence Ministers’ Meeting-Plus (ADMM-Plus) platform,” the statement said.

Since 2018, Malaysia and Japan have signed several understandings and agreements that have strengthened defence ties and elevated military collaboration between the two countries to a more strategic level.

The ministry added that the meeting reflected the shared commitment of both nations to expand cooperation in defence technology and science, aimed at enhancing national defence capabilities and sustaining regional stability.
