A MOTHER and daughter in Terengganu spent the first day of Chinese New Year cleaning up a beach near their home in Kemaman.
Sin Chew Daily reported that Tan San Na, 63, and Tan Yuen Hann, 30, picked up litter along the shore using trash tongs and garbage bags, marking the start of each Lunar New Year with a quiet act of caring for nature since 2022.
“Everyone cleans their home to welcome the new year. What about nature? It needs to be cleaned too,” said Yuen Hann, who runs a tuition centre.
Recalling how the effort began, she said it started because she could not stand “the dirty sight”.
“Once, my mother and I were sitting by the sea, enjoying the breeze, when we saw many plastic bottles and rubbish scattered across the beach.
“I asked her, ‘Why don’t we clear it up?’ She said okay, and we set off the next day,” she said.
Apart from Chinese New Year, the pair also clean beaches in their free time, sometimes inviting a few friends to join them.
“Every time we see a beach become clean again, there’s an indescribable sense of satisfaction,” she added.

> China Press reported that actress Tang Wei was seen telling off a person for cutting the queue at an airport in Beijing.
According to a social media user, the Lust, Caution star was accompanied by her South Korean husband and daughter.
While the family was queuing, a person suddenly cut in line and stood in front of Tang’s nine-year-old daughter, the netizen said.
“I did not notice Tang Wei at first. I heard someone saying, ‘Why do you cut the line?’ and when I looked over, I saw her,” said the netizen.
The person also praised Tang for being warm and approachable, saying she hugged fans and agreed to their requests for photos.
