Congress part of DAP’s internal process, says Fahmi

KUALA LUMPUR: The DAP special congress slated for July 12 is part of the party’s internal process to ensure organisational decisions are upheld, says Datuk Fahmi Fadzil (pic).

The government spokesman, who is also Communications Minister, said DAP had informed its partners in the government in advance about the congress.

“This is DAP’s internal process to ensure that decisions taken are complied with within the party. It is part of their decision-making process,” he told reporters after attending the Arts and Cultural Unity Programme at KL Gateway Mall here yesterday.

Prior to this, DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke said the congress would allow delegates to decide whether party office-bearers should relinquish their government posts, while stressing that the party’s 40 MPs would continue to support Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s administration until the end of the term.

According to Fahmi, the government’s primary focus is to strengthen the national economy and advance institutional reforms, Bernama reported.

These include the efforts to propose Bills on separating the roles of the Attorney General and Public Prosecutor, and on limiting the Prime Minister’s tenure to 10 years, both scheduled for first reading in the Dewan Rakyat tomorrow.

Meanwhile, PKR secretary-general Datuk Dr Fuziah Salleh said DAP’s assurance to support the government even if its leaders step down from government positions was crucial for political stability.

“As a partner in Pakatan Harapan, DAP emphasised its unwavering support for the unity government. This affirmation is the most important element in ensuring the country’s political stability,” Fuziah, who is also Deputy Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister, said when contacted by The Star.

PKR treasurer-general William Leong said no single party will be able to implement all of its manifesto promises in a grand coalition consisting of parties with different ideologies.

“In some coalitions, a component party may support the government but will not want to be part of the executive government to maintain its distinctive identity and preserve its ideology.

“This is what I believe DAP is allowing its members to decide,” he said.

“It is a question on whether some form of reform is better than none or the supporters would prefer no reform at all to preserve its ideology.”
