PETALING JAYA: Police investigations into the Bloomberg report concerning alleged share ownership by Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki must focus on the allegations itself and not their publication, says Nurul Izzah Anwar.
In a TikTok video Friday (Feb 20), the PKR deputy president said that the public is interested in the allegations in the story published and not the process of its publication.
"In other words, if there are allegations, investigations must focus on those allegations, not on the publication process. You don't want to shoot the messenger," she said.
She added that while the special comittee to investigate the matter was a step in the right direction, it only reported to Cabinet and such findings will not be known to the public.
"That is why my suggestion is to create a committee that has the power to direct and supervise with it reporting to Parliament. That is as if it reports to the people.
"The head of such an investigating committee must be completely free and possess integrity. It must also involve representatives from other agencies so that investigations are more open without any perceptions of favourtismn," she said.
She also said that the country had made strides in strengthening its economy leading to more investors into Malaysia.
"This is an important time for use to improve upon its governance measures that make Malaysia a country trusted not only by investors, but also by its people," she said.
Attorney General Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Moktar previously said that a Special Investigation Committee has commenced a probe into the shareholding issue.
Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar was also reported as saying that Public Service Department director-general Tan Sri Wan Ahmad Dahlan Abdul Aziz and Treasury secretary-general Datuk Johan Mahmood Merican are also members of the committee.
The committee will conduct a detailed investigation to ensure due process for the individual being investigated.
Its findings and recommendations will be submitted to the Prime Minister and the relevant disciplinary authority for further consideration in accordance with proper procedures.
