KOTA KINABALU: A volunteer fireman was hurt when assisting in fire extinguishing operations at Kg Pangkalan Bukit Garam, Kinabatangan, late Tuesday (Feb 17).

In the incident, the personnel, along with firemen, Civil Defence officials, police and other responders had gone to the scene following a distress call at around 10.08pm.

The operations involved putting out fire on seven houses up in flames while making sure that victims were helped and other hazardous elements were eliminated as soon as possible.

According to Kota Kinabatangan Fire Station chief Hairi Otuh in a statement, their fire breaking method helped prevent 10 other units nearby from catching fire.

He said during the operation, a volunteer fireman, identified as Mohammad Azri Laji, 24, injured his left leg.

He said they used water sources from their fire truck, from the hydrant and from a river to put out the flames.

“The fire was brought under control at around 11.20pm and we managed to wrap out operations at 1.40am (Wednesday),” said Hairi.

No other casualties were reported in this fire, while the cause of the incident is being investigated.
