A harder bet against illegal gambling

CRACKDOWNS on illegal gambling will be intensified, with seizures already worth billions of ringgit executed, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, said the efforts to combat illegal gambling would still continue despite any challenges faced by the authorities.

“It will however not be easy as illegal gambling operators may be based abroad.

“They also use complex electronic mechanisms, allowing them to open and shut operations almost immediately” he said during Question Time.

Anwar said that curbing illegal gambling would require a two-pronged approach: enforcement measures to address illegal gambling activities, and enhancing public accountability and awareness towards actions that contravene the country’s laws.

He was responding to Fong Kui Lun (PH-Bukit Bintang) who asked whether the government views action against illegal gambling operators as a complementary measure to plug revenue leakages.
