Johor cops tracing motorist who drove against traffic at BSI checkpoint

JOHOR BARU: Police are looking for a Singapore-registered car seen in a dashcam video eluding security at the Bangunan Sultan Iskandar (BSI) Customs, Immigration and Quarantine Complex here last month.

Johor Baru South OCPD Asst Comm Raub Selamat said that police came across the viral video on social media at around 5pm on Tuesday (Feb 10).

"The incident occurred at around 1am on Jan 10 when two traffic police personnel at BSI received information from the building operations command that a Singapore-registered car entered the wrong lane.

"When they approached the driver, he suddenly made a dangerous U-turn and sped off against the flow of traffic within the BSI," he said when contacted on Wednesday (Feb 11).

Asked about one of the policemen seen drawing his gun in the video, ACP Raub said he was only protecting himself and his colleague from danger, given the driver's aggressive actions.

He also added that the policeman did not fire a single shot as the driver left the scene.

"Efforts are ongoing to track down this suspect, including communicating with our Singapore counterparts to find the driver," he said.

The case is being investigated under Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing a public servant in the course of his duty, and Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for driving recklessly and endangering others.

The dashcam recording that went viral over the weekend shows a vehicle approaching what appears to be a checkpoint.

Suddenly, another car enters the same lane from the wrong direction and hits the recording vehicle.

Two policemen are seen running towards the second car. One of them hits it with a traffic cone to compel the driver to stop, while the other policeman draws his firearm.

Instead of stopping, the motorist manoeuvres past the dashcam car and drives off.

The video clip, uploaded on the SG Road Vigilante Facebook post on Sunday (Feb 8), had garnered almost 700,000 views within 24 hours.
