Ipoh rattled by mystery boom again, no seismic activity detected

IPOH:The Perak Minerals and Geoscience Department (JMG) has not received any complaints about the mysterious loud noise heard in several areas here and surrounding districts.

Its director Nizarulikram Abdul Rahim said in a brief response on Monday (Feb 9) that its checks found no reports lodged regarding any seismic activity.

"I have also sought confirmation from the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia).

"I was told by MetMalaysia that its earthquake detection equipment, including seismographs, did not record any tremors yesterday or today.

"At this point, that is all the information we have," he said.

A loud boom shook parts of the city once again, as well as several areas of Tapah, Kampar and even up to Teluk Intan.

It was heard at 11.50pm on Sunday (Feb 8) and early Monday morning.

A similar sound was reported in June last year.

Unexplained loud sounds were also reported in 2012, 2018 and 2024.

At those times, the department confirmed that the noises were not linked to any quarry explosions, bomb tests, or sonic booms from military aircraft.
