GEORGE TOWN: Penang's ban on single-use plastic bags will not apply to hawkers and wet market traders when it comes into force on Sept 1.
Penang housing and environment committee chairman Datuk Seri S. Sundarajoo said the ban only applies to eight categories of outlets, namely hypermarkets, supermarkets, departmental stores, convenience stores, fast food restaurants, petrol station convenience stores, chain stores as well as pharmacies and clinics.
"Hawkers and wet market traders are exempted from the ban as of now.
"This takes into account the operational realities faced by these groups, particularly in handling wet and fresh produce where suitable, practical and cost-effective alternatives to single-use plastic bags are not widely available yet," he said in a statement on Thursday (April 30).
Sundarajoo said plastic bags would remain the default packaging material for hawkers and wet market traders until suitable alternatives are identified.
He said the state government was working with industry players and manufacturers to develop viable and sustainable alternatives.
The Penang Green Council, he added, would continue supporting the efforts through engagement, awareness and implementation initiatives across various sectors.
"Pilot initiatives are being carried out in collaboration with local authorities to support hawkers and wet market traders transitioning towards more sustainable practices.
"While the exemption is currently in place, hawkers and traders are encouraged to begin exploring alternative solutions in preparation for future policy developments," he said.
