Armed Forces vets must be fit, able to perform duties to be absorbed into AKPS, says DG

KLANG: The Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) will only absorb Armed Forces veterans who are fit and able enough to perform the required duties on the ground, says Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain.

When met at a press conference Monday (Feb 9) at Port Klang, the AKPS director-general told the media that he had met the Armed Forces chief Jeneral Datuk Malek Razak Sulaiman earlier in the day for a meeting over the issue.

“I was fortunate enough to meet him just this morning and he has expressed his full commitment in assisting us.

“What I want to make clear is that any veteran personnel that we absorb are those that are still young and active enough to perform the required duties in the field.

“We will also need to look at their respective expertise and compare them to our needs. Here in Port Klang, it is a given that we will need them but from what job aspect?

“Perhaps over here those from the Navy would be more suitable as they are familiar with ships and these are the matters we must take into consideration,” he said.

Previously, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said that approximately 200 veterans of the Armed Forces were expected to join the AKPS starting from the first quarter of the year.

He added that a number of positions for Armed Forces veterans to enter AKPS have been approved by the Public Service Department (JPA), and the recruitment process will be carried out in the near future.
