YONG PENG: The special allocation for the Chinese community recently announced by Johor shows that its leaders listen to the people, says MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.
Dr Wee said the allocation covers a wide spectrum of issues that are important for the community, especially in terms of education and welfare.
"Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi is a man who also listens to the wishes of the community, and is committed to taking care of issues in Johor.
"He understands the problems faced by various communities,” he said, adding that the allocation also provides for temples, schools, and Parent-Teacher Associations (PTA).
Dr Wee, who is also Ayer Hitam MP, added that Johor has been progressing well under the leadership of Onn Hafiz.
He said this when met during a dinner with the Chinese community at the Che Hoon Khor Moral Uplifting Society’s hall here on Sunday (Feb 8) night.
Earlier, in his speech during the event, the Mentri Besar announced a special allocation worth about RM17mil for the Chinese community, covering various aspects.
This includes an allocation of RM1mil for Southern University College, and RM3.27mil for 10 independent Chinese secondary schools across Johor.
“We will also be allocating RM1.3mil to 219 Chinese schools (SJKC) for their teachers’ rooms and Parent-Teacher Associations (PTA).
“Some RM1.5mil has been allocated for lion dance troupes and RM2mil for non-Muslim houses of worship and Chinese non-governmental organisations (NGOs),” Onn Hafiz said in his speech.
Other allocations include those involving Chinese New Villages, Chinese New Year programmes and the distribution of ang pow.
