Johor grants special RM17mil CNY allocation for Chinese schools, welfare


YONG PENG: Johor has announced a special allocation worth about RM17mil for the Chinese community, covering various aspects including welfare and education.

Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi said this includes an allocation of RM1mil for Southern University College, and RM3.27mil for 10 independent Chinese secondary schools across Johor.

“We will also be allocating RM1.3mil to 219 Chinese schools (SJKC) for their teachers’ rooms and Parent-Teacher Associations (PTA).

“Some RM1.5mil has been allocated for lion dance troupes and RM2mil for non-Muslim houses of worship and Chinese non-governmental organisations (NGOs),” he said in his speech on Sunday (Feb 8) evening.

The Mentri Besar made the announcement in Mandarin during a dinner with the Chinese community at the Che Hoon Khor Moral Uplifting Society’s hall here.

Also present were MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong, Johor health and environment committee chairman Ling Tian Soon, and Johor Islamic affairs committee chairman Mohd Fared Mohd Khalid.

The Mentri Besar added that some RM3mil will be allocated through Bantuan Kasih Johor to Chinese New Villages.

“A total of RM4.36mil has been allocated for Chinese New Year celebration programmes and the distribution of ang pow,” he said.
