Over a hundred turtle hatchlings released in Sabah conservation efforts

KOTA KINABALU: Over a hundred turtle hatchlings were released into the sea over the past two weeks across two islands in Sabah.

The most recent release took place on Tuesday (Feb 3), where 75 green turtle hatchlings were set free from Pulau Tiga in Kuala Penyu.

Sabah Parks stated that these initiatives are part of ongoing efforts to conserve and protect the endangered species.

“We hope these hatchlings will reach adulthood and contribute to the sustainable population growth of green turtles and the marine ecosystem,” said Sabah Parks director Datuk Maklarin Lakim.

Earlier, another release was conducted on Selingan Island in Sandakan as part of an environmental seminar for Sabah judges and legal practitioners held in late January.

During the event, participants witnessed turtle nesting and helped release hatchlings into the ocean.

The legal group also took the initiative to adopt 35 turtle nests as a symbol of their commitment to environmental rehabilitation.

Sabah Parks expressed hope that such strategic collaborations would continue for the wellbeing of the environment and future generations.

The green turtle, scientifically known as Chelonia mydas, remains a focal point of conservation efforts within the state's marine parks.
