MMEA detains two boats manned by foreigners for illegal fishing

PORT KLANG: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency has detained two vessels manned by Myanmar nationals for illegal fishing.

The vessels were detained 16.6 nautical miles southwest of Tanjung Karang on Friday (Feb 6).

Selangor MMEA director Captain Abdul Muhaimin Muhammad Salleh said both vessels were operated by a total of nine Myanmar nationals aged from 24 to 50.

"All crewmembers did not have valid identification documents, work permits nor permission from the Fisheries Department director-general," he said.

Also seized was a catch of fish weighing approximately 450kg.

The boats' crewmembers were arrested and taken to the marine police jetty at Pulau Indah.

Capt Abdul Muhaimin said the case is being investigated under the Fisheries Act 1985 for violating licensing terms and employing foreign workers without approval.

The crewmembers are also being investigated under the Immigration Act 1959/63.

Those with information on suspicious activities at sea are urged to contact the MMEA at 999 or the Selangor maritime operations centre at 03-3176 0627.
