KULAI: A chemical tanker driver was killed on the spot after being trapped in the vehicle following an accident at Simpang Kampung Seri Maju on Wednesday (Aug 5) night near here.
Bandar Baru Kulai Fire and Rescue Station chief Muhammad Fauzi Awang said the Johor Fire and Rescue Department Operation Centre received an emergency call on the incident at 8.14pm Wednesday.
“Our team arrived at the scene located about 9km away from the station at 8.28pm," he said in a statement.
Muhammad Fauzi said the accident caused the chemical Acetone (UN109) carried by the tanker to spill onto the Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB) railway track near the scene.
Acetone (UN1090) is a clear, volatile, and highly flammable liquid organic solvent with a distinctive sweet or pungent odour, widely used to manufacture plastics, fibers, resins, and other chemical precursors.
“We used special equipment to extricate the body of the 42-year-old male driver, who was declared dead at the site by the medical team from the Health Ministry," added Muhammad Fauzi.
He said the operation was led by senior fire officer II Mohd Asri Yousri with 11 firemen from the Bandar Baru Kulai and Skudai Fire and Rescue Stations ended at 11pm.
Earlier, it was reported that KTMB Shuttle Selatan and ETS services on the Kulai-Kempas route had experienced delays following a power supply disruption caused by an incident involving a lorry carrying flammable liquid that crashed near the railway line on Wednesday.
