Bangladeshi worker crushed to death in spider lift crane mishap on Jalan Perak

PETALING JAYA: A Bangladeshi man was killed when he was crushed by an overturned spider lift crane while carrying out signboard repair works along Jalan Perak here on Friday night (Feb 6).

Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief Asst Comm Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa said the incident occurred at about 10.40pm.

He said the 32-year-old victim, who was the crane operator, was pronounced dead at the scene after the crane lost balance and overturned.

“Preliminary investigations found that the victim was carrying out repair works on the roadside using a remote control when the spider lift crane was believed to have struck the edge of the pavement.

“As a result, the crane lost its balance, overturned and crushed the victim as well as two nearby vehicles,” he said in a statement on Saturday (Feb 7).

ACP Mohd Zamzuri said the vehicles involved were two four-wheel-drive vehicles: one with a driver and a passenger, and the other with a single driver.

“However, the drivers and passengers were not injured and are safe,” he said.

He added that the victim’s death was confirmed by an assistant medical officer from Hospital Kuala Lumpur.

Further investigations are ongoing, including identifying the crane's owner and the contractor involved, and verifying the work permit issued by Kuala Lumpur City Hall.

“Closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage from the area is also being obtained to assist with the investigation,” he said.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Those with information on the incident are urged to contact the Tun H.S. Lee Traffic Police Station at 03-2071 9999 or the nearest police station.
