Fisherman missing after boat capsizes in collision off Pengerang

KOTA TINGGI: A local fisherman is missing after the fishing boat he was on capsized following a collision with another vessel in waters off Pengerang.

Kota Tinggi OCPD Supt Yusof Othman said police received a report at about 1am on Sunday (Feb 1) from a local woman, who said a fishing boat carrying her husband and his worker had overturned at sea.

“Based on the information received, a rescue team from the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA), together with the Marine Police Region Two (Pengerang), was immediately dispatched to the location to provide assistance,” he said on Monday (Feb 2).

Supt Yusof added that initial investigations found that the fibre fishing boat was carrying a 55-year-old Malaysian man and his 32-year-old non-Malaysian worker when it was struck by another boat whose owner has yet to be identified, causing it to capsize.

He said the non-Malaysian victim was later found safe by the Marine Police, clinging to a piece of the boat’s wreckage.

“However, the Malaysian man has yet to be located, and search-and-rescue operations are ongoing,” he added.

Supt Yusof urged fishermen operating in the surrounding waters to assist authorities in the search for the missing victim.

He also urged members of the public with information related to the incident to come forward and lodge a report at the nearest police station or contact the Kota Tinggi district police headquarters operations room at 07-883 7222.

Alternatively, they may contact Pengerang police station acting chief Sjn Romeo Usit at 011-101 82027.
