KOTA KINABALU: The RM11.8mil spent on the refurbishment of 26 toilet facilities at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA), carried out in two phases, reflects a full-scope upgrade to ensure uninterrupted airport operations.
Malaysia Airports said the refurbishment project aims at addressing the ageing infrastructure at the terminal, which has been in operation for over two decades and serves millions of passengers annually, with its facilities subject to heavy and continuous use.
“Across the airport, the renovation covers a total of 196 toilet cubicles, including 25 for persons with disabilities, four baby care rooms and 26 janitor storerooms.
“The project involves the complete strip-out and replacement of plumbing and sanitary systems, waterproofing and drainage improvements, mechanical and electrical upgrades, improved accessibility features and the installation of high-durability fixtures,” it said in a statement yesterday, Bernama reported.
Phase One of the renovation was completed in March 2025, while Phase Two is scheduled for completion this April.
It said the upgrades formed part of ongoing efforts to ensure KKIA remains safe, functional and fit for purpose.
