GOMBAK: Senior government officials must not be spared from graft investigations, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
The Prime Minister stressed that graft enforcement must continue at all levels until a positive impact can be felt by the country and Rakyat.
“Most often, damage comes from above. That is why I stress enforcement even against senior leaders, including secretaries-general, directors-general, and even Cabinet members, who must be monitored closely,” he said after performing Friday prayers here on Friday (Jan 30).
Anwar also said enforcement was among the topics discussed during the Cabinet meeting earlier.
He emphasised that it must be done at the federal, state and also the local authorities level.
“There must be a consolidated effort that involves the entire government machinery. Only this way, can our country be fixed,” he said.
He further stressed that enforcement at the local authority level should include aspects such as cleanliness and the illegal entry of foreign workers, among others.
On Wednesday (Jan 28), Anwar said he was giving government enforcement officers one week to decide if they are ready to take on greater responsibility in the fight against corruption or they can request for a change in duties.
The Prime Minister said it was unacceptable that enforcement officers still tolerate wrongdoing such as smuggling, bribing and gangsterism.
Earlier Friday, the Environment Department (DOE) director-general, his deputy and an officer were remanded for seven days to assist investigations linked to alleged irregularities involving electronic waste (e-waste).
