Thunderstorms, heavy rain expected in Perak, Sarawak and Sabah


PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a warning of thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds across parts of Perak, Sarawak and Sabah, effective until 1pm on Thursday (Jan 29).

MetMalaysia, in a statement at 9.45am, said the severe weather is expected to affect Kerian and Larut, Matang Dan Selama in Perak.

In Sarawak, the warning covers Mukah (Matu, Dalat and Mukah), Bintulu (Tatau and Bintulu) and Miri (Subis).

In Sabah, the affected areas include Pedalaman (Tambunan); Pantai Barat (Putatan, Penampang, Kota Kinabalu, Tuaran, Ranau and Kota Belud); Tawau (Lahad Datu); the entire Sandakan region; and Kudat (Kota Marudu and Kudat).

MetMalaysia issues these warnings when there are signs indicating a thunderstorm with a rainfall intensity exceeding 20mm per hour that is imminent or expected to occur for more than one hour.

A thunderstorm warning is a short-term warning that is valid for a period not exceeding six hours for any single release.
