Immigration raid sees over 200 arrests in Kajang

KAJANG: A sweep by the Immigration Department here led to over 200 arrests.

Immigration deputy director-general (operations) Datuk Lokman Effendi Ramli, at the operation scene tonight at Taman Emas, said that the operation saw over 1,000 inspections.

“From that number, a total of 220 foreigners were detained for various immigration offences, including having no valid passes to enter the country.

“The ages of those detained were 18 to 52,” he said.

He added that the area raided included both business premises and homes.

“We also used our thermal imaging drone that showed over 15 suspects hiding on rooftops. Moving forward, we will continue to employ our technology to aid us.

“This raid was the result of a two-week surveillance period and public complaints. I have been informed that there were attempts to escape, but no injuries have been reported.

“They will be sent to the Semenyih depot for further investigations,” he said.

Earlier at the scene, there had been several tense moments when chases ensued between enforcement officers and suspects.

At one of the raided homes in a shop lot, a female foreigner almost escaped but was thwarted after officers noticed her hiding behind a barricaded door.

Another also fell through the ceiling in an attempt to escape, almost hitting the raiding party.

Outside, at least one foreigner was seen trapped on the rooftop of a building after being surrounded by immigration officers.
