Gig Consultation Council best platform to decide minimum income, says E-hailing Alliance

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian E-hailing Alliance supports Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri R Ramanan’s remarks regarding minimum income for gig workers.

"The establishment of the Gig Consultation Council mechanism is reasonable and realistic, particularly following the implementation of the Gig Workers Act gazetted in December 2025,” said its chief activist, Jose Rizal, in a statement on Wednesday (Jan 28).

Jose also said the alliance welcomed the clarification that the RM1,700 minimum wage is only a benchmark for conventional wage policies under the Employment Act, and that determining a minimum income for gig workers requires separate discussions with representatives from each sector.

Jose urged the issue to be negotiated through the council.

"This approach ensures that the voices of gig workers are officially heard," he said.
