Teen killed in eight-bike pileup on Butterworth-Kulim Expressway

BUTTERWORTH: An 18-year-old was killed in an eight-motorcycle crash on the Butterworth-Kulim Expressway on Sunday (Jan 25) early hours.

Central Seberang Perai OCPD Asst Comm Helmi Aris said police received information from the public about the 3.30am incident, which occurred at KM8.2 (Kulim bound) of the expressway.

"Initial investigations found that all eight motorcycles were on the way from Seberang Jaya, heading towards Kulim," he said in a statement.

It is believed that one of the motorcycles brushed against another, causing it to lose control and veer, which then led to the other bikes colliding as well.

As a result of the collision, the teenager fell and struck the metal divider separating the vehicle lane from the motorcycle lane.

ACP Helmi said the victim suffered severe injuries to his head and body and was killed on the spot.

"The body of the victim has been sent to Hospital Seberang Jaya for post-mortem," he added.

Meanwhile, seven other riders aged between 18 and 22 sustained various injuries to their arms and legs and were referred for further treatment at Hospital Seberang Jaya.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.

Police are urging anyone with information related to the incident to contact the nearest police station or reach out to investigating officer Insp. Nor Aliza Fatima at 017-4046215.
