Australia deports M'sian with child sexual abuse material found on his phone

SYDNEY: A 26-year-Malaysian has been deported from Australia after border authorities found over 100 images of child sexual abuse material (CSAM) on his mobile phone.

The man arrived in Sydney and was selected for a device examination by the Australian Border Force (ABF).

"On his phone, officers allegedly found over 100 images of CSAM, including anime and AI-generated pictures.

"The man was detained for questioning then sent back to Malaysia. This also resulted in the cancellation of his visa," the ABF said in a statement.

The Malaysian was among 17 travellers intercepted by the ABF in various parts of Australia including New South Wales, Western Australia, South Australia and Queensland between Jan 1 and 14.

Others allegedly caught with CSAM on their devices during the crackdown included Australian men aged 70, 57 and 24, and a 27-year-old Australian woman.

ABF said its officers have stopped over 435 potential child sex offenders at airports around the country between Jan 1, 2024 and Dec 31 last year.

ABF commander David Coyles said its officers are skilled at identifying individuals who attempt to carry such material across the border.
