KUALA LUMPUR: Ideas from the Opposition that bear merit should be considered, says a government backbencher.
Datuk Seri Hasni Mohammad (BN-Simpang Renggam) said this reflects mature politics where differences in opinion are celebrated and the country’s interests are prioritised.
“Recognition is due for proposals that bear merit. This includes those from the Opposition.
“Ideas should be evaluated based on merit and not who raised it,” he said when debating the Royal Address in the Dewan Rakyat on Tuesday (Jan 20).
He also urged former Cabinet ministers and deputy ministers who have since turned government backbenchers to continue contributing through Parliamentary Special Select Committees (PSSC).
“Contributions should not end with positions. In fact, it can be enhanced through the PSSC where checks and balances can be practiced.
“This supports the drafting of more mature policies,” he said.
Hasni added that while the various Cabinet reshuffles reflected the government’s bravery to adapt, it should not impact the continuity of policies.
“As there is only a short window till the next general elections, our focus must not be on drastic changes but to improve the implementation of existing policies,” he said.
Since helming the Prime Minister post in 2022, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has announced two Cabinet reshuffles, resulting in several ministers and deputy ministers losing their posts while others were shifted to different portfolios.
The most recent reshuffle happened in December last year
