KOTA BHARU: Kelantan police have recorded a statement from the driver of a vehicle belonging to the Fire and Rescue Department that is believed to have seriously injured a four-year-old girl in Bachok on Jan 3.
Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said the investigation would be conducted transparently and would not favour any party, according to Sinar Harian.
"So far, three complaints regarding the accident have been received. The case is being investigated under Section 43 of the Road Transport Act 1987," he said.
He said this at a press conference after officiating at the Kelantan Police Contingent Headquarters’ monthly assembly here on Sunday (Jan 15).
In the incident, which was said to have happened at about 10.45am, the victim, Nurul Afia Raisha Muhamad Shamsul, suffered serious injuries to her abdomen, as well as fractures to her right shoulder, collarbone and ribs, after she was believed to have been hit by the vehicle.
Meanwhile, the child’s mother, Nurul Afzan Che Ramlee, 33, said her daughter had undergone three minor surgeries on her chest and was showing positive progress, although she remained in critical condition.
She said that the youngest of her three children still needed respiratory assistance.
"She is currently receiving treatment at the Universiti Sains Malaysia Hospital (HUSM). During the incident, my daughter was playing in a field where a community sports event was taking place before being hit by a reversing vehicle belonging to the department.
"At that time, several other children were also playing in the same area because the location was not on the road but rather a sports ground that was considered safe," she said.
According to her, her daughter was initially taken by an Emergency Medical Rescue Services unit to Bachok Hospital for first-line treatment, before being transferred to HUSM due to her critical condition.
