PETALING JAYA: Three individuals were taken to the hospital after being exposed to ammonia gas that leaked from a lorry at the Seremban toll plaza on Thursday (Jan 15).
The Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) said the incident occurred at the entry ramp heading towards Kuala Lumpur, leaving a toll attendant, a security guard and the lorry driver experiencing breathing difficulties.
“All three victims were rushed to the hospital. They are currently in stable condition and under medical observation,” it said in the statement on Saturday (Jan 17).
LLM expressed concern for those affected, including highway users caught in the disruption, and stressed that the safety and well-being of road users and workers remained its top priority.
Following the alert, LLM said swift action was taken by activating standard safety procedures, including temporarily closing the affected area to prevent further risks to motorists and on-duty personnel.
Highway concession personnel, emergency responders, the Fire and Rescue Department and other relevant agencies were deployed to secure the area and ensure it was safe before reopening.
“LLM takes seriously any incident that could compromise public safety.
"We call on all heavy vehicle operators, especially those transporting hazardous materials, to ensure their vehicles are properly maintained and meet safety requirements before operating on the roads,” the authority said.
LLM said it would continue working closely with relevant parties to ensure smooth and safe highway operations and minimise disruptions to motorists.
Members of the public were also reminded to comply with directives issued by authorities and the concessionaire for their own safety.
