Follow the president, not get influenced by other parties, Umno told

KUALA LUMPUR: The Umno Youth wing must not be influenced by other parties and only follow the leadership of party president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, says an Umno Youth delegate.

Penang Umno Youth chief Mohd Hilmi Elias described Ahmad Zahid as the captain of the ship, and listening to captains from outside will only cause this ship to capsize.

“We are traversing the rough seas and must only listen to our captain, not those steering other ships. We must eradicate the party of any Si Kitol (traitor),” he said when debating the president’s speech at the Umno general assembly here on Saturday (Jan 17).

Si Kitol refers to a figure who caused division and helped lead to the downfall of the Melaka Sultanate.

Mohd Hilmi likened the Youth wing’s role to that of sailors in the ship.

“If we notice something that could negatively impact our journey, we will make it known to the captain to ensure a smooth sailing journey,” he said.

He said such actions should not be perceived as going against the president.

“Our loyalty to the party and president is unquestionable, although we can be very vocal. We are not the kind to only say favourable things to appease our leaders,” he said.

Mohd Hilmi said the wing will also be at the forefront to defend the president against any attacks.

He said that it was through Ahmad Zahid’s trust in the wing’s abilities that the party is able to produce young leaders such as Muhammad Akmal, who is Merlimau assemblyman and Duyong assemblyman Datuk Mohd Noor Helmy Abdul Halim.

“Our love for the party and president has never waned,” he said, acknowledging Ahmad Zahid’s trust in the youth wing.
