KUALA LUMPUR: There has been no information relayed to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) over allegations that a MP received RM9.5mil in relation to the corporate mafia case, says Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said.
"Based on information received from the MACC, they have not received any information or complaint containing facts or evidence relating to the allegation," said the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) in a parliamentary written reply dated July 16.
"The government welcomes any individual or party who possesses information, facts or evidence of any alleged misconduct to submit it to the relevant authorities to enable investigations to be carried out.
"The MACC remains ready to examine and investigate any information that is supported by sufficient grounds and evidence, in accordance with the applicable legal provisions," she added.
She was responding to a question by Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan (PN-Kota Baru) on the outcome of the investigation into allegations that RM9.5 mil was paid to a MP in connection with efforts to resolve a network described as a "corporate mafia", which has raised serious concerns regarding corporate governance, the abuse of political influence and the integrity of national institutions.
It was reported that businessman Victor Chin claimed he had handed over RM9.5mil to a government MP, said to be a "service fee" and not for an out-of-court settlement or to "kaw tim" (settle) any case or halt investigations by enforcement agencies.
He also claimed the payment was made to stop pressure he was facing in relation to a scandal described as a "corporate mafia".
To another question by RSN Rayer (PH-Jelutong), she said the government was open to a proposal to set up a Royal Commission of Inquiry or any other appropriate mechanism if deemed necessary.
"Any consideration of a proposal to establish an RCI to investigate the 'corporate mafia' issue and related matters will be made in accordance with the procedures and requirements provided for under the law.
"It will take into account the facts, findings and latest developments arising from the ongoing investigations by the relevant authorities," she said.
Rayer had asked about the status of investigations into the alleged 'corporate mafia' case and a proposal to establish a RCI to investigate the matter.
