KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Education Department has confirmed that a student who fell within a school compound in Papar is in stable condition and did not suffer serious injuries.

Media reports online have claimed that the student had fallen from a building at SMKA Tun Datu Mustapha in Kinarut, Papar - the same school where Form One student Zara Qairina Mahathir fell to her death about a year ago.

The Sabah Education Department, however declined to identify the school and urged that the school's name not be mentioned due to the sensitive nature of the incident.

In a statement issued on Friday (July 17), the department said the school immediately provided first aid, informed the student's family and police, and secured the scene to prevent panic after the incident.

"The student received examination and treatment at the hospital. Based on the medical report, the student did not sustain serious injuries and is now in stable condition," the department said.

It said the student's welfare, safety and emotional well-being continued to be monitored, with psychosocial and emotional support provided to both the student and members of the school community affected by the incident.

Preliminary investigations by the school found no indication of criminal elements or bullying, it added.

The department said it would fully cooperate with the ongoing investigation by the authorities.

It also urged the public not to spread unverified information that could interfere with investigations or affect the well-being of the student, the family and the school community.
