Woman, two children injured after tree crashes into home

SANDAKAN: A 47-year-old woman and two 11-year-old cousins were injured when a tree came crashing onto their family home in Kampung Gum-Gum Kecil, Batu 16, near here late Thursday (July 16).

The tree smashed into the kitchen of the house, damaging about 40% of the structure and trapping the occupants in a terrifying ordeal.

The Sabah Fire and Rescue Department said it received an emergency call at 10.04pm and dispatched a team from the Sandakan fire station, which arrived at the scene at 10.31pm.

By the time firefighters arrived, the three injured victims had already been taken to hospital.

They were identified as Muhaini Awang, 47, Dayang Daphne Danisha Terrence, 11, and her cousin, Dayang Azzwenna Aqillah Hazis, 11.

Firefighters used chainsaws to cut up and remove the fallen tree before carrying out checks to ensure the area was safe and there was no further danger.

The operation, involving six firefighters, concluded at 9.10am on Friday (Jul 17).
